It has come to be that we are babysitting an 8 week old pit bull puppy on a near daily basis. This breed of dog requires a strong leader.
All forcefulness must be a last resort if you want a loving, well-mannered pitty.
This little guys name is Mulisha.
He plays hard for a few minutes, transforms into a little monster, testing his boundaries.
Playing hard sometimes includes a game of tug of war but we don’t play to see who is stronger,
They take one end of their string toy and we’ll (whoever is playing with pup, everybody’s rules for the dog should be consistent) have the other. When he pulls back with all his tiny ferocity we move our end left and right then maybe a little give and take. As long as we’re controlling how the game is being played bringing it to a close is as simple as stilling our hand and saying no more.
This lets the dog know that we can have control back when we decide, not them.
Until a couple of days ago Mulisha liked to jump and bite at our feet. We corrected this by lightly tapping the side of his face and saying (sternly) NO!
When he jumps on my legs when it’s not acceptable, I hold my hands steady on his shoulder blades and keep him at arm’s length until he settles down
I didn’t want to fall in love with another pup but this little guy has stolen my heart.
